Why Green Tea Extract Is Good For Your Health

Green Tea extract, derived chemically from Green Tea Leaves (Carmellia Sinensis), is a popular herbal product on the market today. Many of the compounds found in green tea extract, especially the catechins (GTC) have powerful antioxidant effects, which are believed to be responsible for many positive health effects derived from consuming green tea extract, which include reduced cardiac disease, and reduced incidence of many types of cancer. The catechins in Gren Tea Extract are classified as polyphenols, and there are six types, catechin, gallaogatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin gallate, and apigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The last ingredient is believed to be the most powerful and most effective of the antioxidants found in the extract in producing the health benefits attributed to green tea. Green teta also has three types of flavanoids, kaempferol, guercetin, and myricetin which are believed to be contributory to the overall benefits ascribed to drinking green tea.

Closer examination of the extract reveals that it’s 20 times more antioxidant active than Vitamin C, with most of the activity ascribed to EGCG. The extract has the ability to scavenge damaging lipid-derived free radicals found in the body. It’s ability to accomplish this is 50 times more powerful than the antioxidants found in Gingko Biloba. The specific inhibitory effect of Green Tea Catechins (GTC) against lipid oxidation may derive from its ability to boost the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione dismutase (GSHPx). The powerful antioxidant chemicals in GTE are believed to be responsible for the extract’s anti-carcinogenic properties. The extract has been shown to have inhibitory effects on cancer cells, blocking their cell cycle, and inducing programmed cell death. The tea also has anti-inflammatory and anti microbial effects, and drinking green tea is consequently considered beneficial for mouth hygiene.

The health benefits of GTE, which have been known to natural practitioners for centuries, are now being seen in scientific studies. It has been shown that regular green tea drinkers may have a reduced incidence of cardiac disease and certain types of cancers. Epidemiological studies have shown a reduced incidence of cardiac disease in regular green tea drinkers. A recent case study showed that drinking green tea and consuming certain types of medicinal mushrooms reduced the incidence of breast cancer by 90%. A powerful study in the Journal of the American Medical Society concluded “Green tea consumption is associated with reduced mortality due to all causes and due to cardiovascular disease but not with reduced mortality due to cancer.” Population studies at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine have shown that the antioxidant properties of green tea are responsible for a reduction in atherosclerosis and a reduction in the formation of harmful levels of LDL cholesterol in the body.

Both traditional and modern scientific evidence is showing that the consumption of green tea or green tea extract has multiple health benefits. While the caffeine in green tea is considered responsible for some of the anti-carcinogenic effects of the drink, decaffeinated forms of green tea extract are also available on the market. eHelps, considers natural antioxidant rich green tea extract to be one of nature’s great healing herbs, which should be included in a comprehensive natural antioxidant preparation, and we include it as one of the 14 ingredients in our own natural antioxidant formula BioOPC+ .
